Welcome back Melrose Bands! After an amazing fall of music making we have lots to look forward to this winter/spring. Here are some updates for our groups:
The MHS Concert Band had a wonderful performance at our Winter Concert. Up next is our Band Night Concert on March 4th, where we will be playing some new and challenging repetoire. The Concert Band is excited to be attending the MICCA festival for the first time in many years this spring, and will be competing at Danvers High School on Friday, March 27th. We hope to see you there!
The youth band had a successful start to their year performing a the winter concert for the first time this year! Ms. White and the group have had great rehearsals since returning from break with lots of new faces joining as well. We are looking forward to what they have in store for our March concert. Elementary lessons wrapped up a successful Winter Break Challenge where students completed different activities to earn prizes.
Our MVMMS ensembles have begun preparation for the March Concert as well. Each grade level has seen an uptick in the difficulty of their music, and students are rising to the challenge! We're excited to see some wonderful performances soon!
Our Winter Guard and Coach Casey Doherty are excited for the start of their competitive season! The group has lots of new members this year. Melrose is hosting a huge Winter Guard and Percussion show on March 7th! Save the date to see some truly amazing students!
Mr. Shumate has the MHS Jazz Band off to a strong start! We are excited for their first performance of the year at the new Jazz and Percussion concert on March 5th. They will be joined by the brand new MVMMS Jazz Band, a new group this year that has been rehearsing before school once a week.
Hope to catch you at our upcoming concerts!

Hi Melrose Band Community! We are very excited to have a new website home for Melrose Band Info! On this site, you can find contact info for the band directors, practice assignments for Elementary Band lessons, a calendar with all of our band events, and updates from Mr. Vermilyea and Ms. White.
Here are a few updates about what the band program has been up to so far this school year!
It has been an exciting start to our year for the Melrose Band Program. The MHS Marching Band just wrapped up their competition season, capping off a successful year with a Second Place Division Three finish at NESBA finals. The group ended the year with a strong score of 92.73, and also took home the caption awards for Best Visuals and Best Color Guard! Congratulations to all involved! The Marching Band will wrap up their year with a performance at Fenway Park for the annual Melrose/Wakefield Thanksgiving Football Game on Tuesday, November 25th. Hope to see you there!
Elementary Lessons and Youth Band are off to a strong start with over 150 4th and 5th graders taking band lessons this year! The Youth Band started their year early and are hard at work preparing to perform at our Winter Concert as well this year. Elementary families, make sure to check out the "Elementary Lessons" tab which has weekly practice assignments, as well as links to supplemental pieces, tuners, and suggested supplies.
We had a new concert this year for the High School Concert Band, performing in late October in a joint concert with the HS Chorus and HS Orchestra. The Band performed "Rizz," a piece by one of the group's favorite composers JaRod Hall. We ended the night with a joint performance of Jeanine Lasky's "We'll Rise Above," with every member from Band, Orchestra, and Chorus performing together. It was a wonderful evening of music and was a great opportunity to hear what our HS colleagues are up to.
The MVMMS Bands are off to a flying start as well! We have two new groups this year. Our new Middle School Jazz Band has had a great start to the year, getting to school nice and early for our before school rehearsals. The group won't perform until May, but you won't want to miss it! The 6th Grade Beginning Band has been hard at work learning instruments for the first time. We are excited to share their hard work in December!
It has been a wonderful start to the year, and we can't wait to see what's to come!
